About Untranslated Japan

If you cannot see the philosophy, you can only see the surface. This site begins where the surface ends.

The Person Behind This Site

I am Japanese. I have lived in Australia for a long time, and over those years I have listened to many people return from Japan and tell me what they found there. The food was extraordinary. The streets were clean and safe. The trains were so quiet, and always on time. Everyone was so polite and kind. No rubbish bins.

All of it true. And yet, each time, I noticed something that had not made the journey back with them.

Not a detail. Something deeper. The reason the food takes that particular form. The thinking behind the silence in a carriage. The philosophy that shapes how a stranger stands at a certain distance — and why that distance is a form of consideration, not coldness. These things do not surface easily in a week's travel, because they do not sit on the surface. They live in the way Japanese people think — a way of seeing the world that is genuinely different, and that gives rise to everything else: the daily habits, the craft, the aesthetics, the hospitality.

Without that philosophy in view, what remains is impression. Beautiful, accurate impression — but impression nonetheless.

Untranslated Japan is written from inside that philosophy. Not explaining Japan to the reader — placing the reader inside the thinking, and letting them see what becomes visible from there.

I have spent twenty years working as a translator between Japanese and English — across Japan and Australia, across industries. That work taught me the distance between what a language says and what it means. This site is what became possible when I had the time to close that distance properly, without a brief telling me where to stop.
